Kenyatta Returns to Kenya

It was on 24th September 1946 that Kenyatta arrived at Mombasa to a warm reception from Grace, her two children and his friends. In Nairobi, he was received by hundreds and was given a hero’s welcome which continued right the way through to his arrival in Dagoreti. Old KCA members and neighbors streamed in for the celebrations. But Kenyatta still had to reconcile his claims to leadership with the traditional forces within the tribe. One powerful focus of these tribal feelings lay in Peter Mbiyu’s father, Senior Chief Koinange. Koinange gave Kenyatta one of his daughters as a wife, which cemented their political affiliation and friendship.
