Prior to 1978, he served as the third Vice President of Kenya from 1967 to 1978.

He was the 5th child of Kabon, Chebii's senior wife.  There is a believe that the name might have originated from his  mother’s name Kimoi since he was the last born or was raised by the mother hence called Arap Kimoi which he shortened to be Moi. He was named Toroitich, which means 'welcome home the cattle' espousing how central cattle were in the life of his community. His home village was Kurieng'wo in Sacho Location of Baringo District. He was named after his father Kimoi arap Chebii a Sot clan herdsman that settled in the Tugen Hills.  At the age of four, Moi's father died and his elder brother Tuitoek played a guardian role.
