Kenya became a Republic on 12 December 1964. Nairobi became Kenya's capital in 1907. Kenya adopted its current Constitution on 27 August 2010. The Mau Mau Uprising played a pivotal role in Kenya's struggle for independence. Over 1.5 million Kenyans were detained during the State of Emergency (1952–1960).
