Kenya became a Republic on 12 December 1964. Nairobi became Kenya's capital in 1907. Kenya adopted its current Constitution on 27 August 2010. The Mau Mau Uprising played a pivotal role in Kenya's struggle for independence. Over 1.5 million Kenyans were detained during the State of Emergency (1952–1960). Kenya's first Constitution came into effect on 12 December 1963. The Presidential Standard is the official flag of the President of Kenya. The Lancaster House Conferences laid the constitutional foundation for independent Kenya. Kenya gained internal self-rule (Madaraka) on 1 June 1963, and full independence six months later.
